Speaking of great stories It's an exciting and dangerous time for Francis and his artistic friends. Soon they'll graduate from Blessed Heart, and the gang will be splitting up for good. They've worked together to create their masterpiece - a school bull I never attended Catholic school, though my husband did, and he still bears the scar on his knuckle where a nun smacked him with a metal edged ruler.

But now Father Kavanaugh has discovered their other spectacular work of art - a comic book entitled Sodom vs. Gomorrah '74 , and he's not too wild about the drawings of priests and nuns knowing one another rather biblically. How are they going to worm out of this one?

By pulling another even more outrageous stunt, like say Yeah - that's the ticket. That'll take the priest's mind right off that silly old comic book. To quote one of the boys, "The problem with life is that when you're not in trouble it's boring. I walked into the sacristy like I belonged there and took it. Looking back, watching it even then I knew the book it was based on would be great and I was right. It's amazing. It is one of those rare books that the author got it right. It is well done. This is once in a lifetime kind of a novel and it is an only book by a deeply talented writer. He's gone but the fruition of his labor would still devastate you and you will let it.

Because that's fair. And wow, why not. It is beautiful. Jodie Foster helped with the visuals and by bringing attention to this gem of a novel.

This book made me feel closer to myself.

It was endearing like that. I want to give this book a ten stars.

Can I? Aug 22, Brandon Will rated it really liked it Shelves: Life is all fun and games until somebody gets hurt.

This book starts beautifully, perfectly showing humor and beauty in teenage life's banality. First love, lust, and sexual experiences are told beautifully, honestly. Every once in a while, the book will get a bit purple in it's prose, but sometimes that works, and sometimes it's a little distracting, a bit much, but you'll quickly forgive it, I think.

It's part of who Chris Fuhrman is.

It's a great book, with a lot of heart, and fun, and truth Life is all fun and games until somebody gets hurt. It's a great book, with a lot of heart, and fun, and truths.

Being posthumously published ads to it's profound feel -- this was one man's life's work, all he could figure out: One of the best ending paragraphs I've ever found: And I want them to remember how it was when they were children. I don't want them to grow up entirely. Every adult is the creation of a child. My own signature, that identifying scrawl required by parcel postmen and valued by a handful of comic-book fans, that signature was devised by a thirteen-year-old boy who thought I'd want to seem important one day.

I am stuck with it. My life is the result of that boy's dreams and limitations, and of the company that boy kept a long time ago, back when things could still happen for the first time. Dec 23, Billy Tighe rated it really liked it. She's twelve years old, man. She's not sophisticated enough to not like you. Sure she looks like she stepped out of a Frazetta painting, and she's nice, intelligent, but she's a kid.

Even more than us. She's probably flattered out of her mind. Don't agonize, go take your damn bounty.

My "I'm realistic. My attraction to her at that moment tugged so heavily I was actually leaning down towards her, and her least gesture became unbearably precious, the delicate closing of her mouth, her fingers relaxing in her lap, the sudden soothing green of her upturned eyes.

Her awareness of me made the entire universe a shimmering drunken joy. I'll take any dare, fight guys twice as big as me, I don't care. But the few times I've talked to a girl I liked, it's like my mind turned into Hallmark card. Scary equals important, right?

Jan 22, Coco rated it it was amazing Shelves: I love this book. I don't know why. Whenever I recommend it to someone they laugh because the title as well as the entire story is ironic.

This is about two best friends in catholic school who rebel. They would, anyway, as they both seem to be very unhappy boys. Particularly one whose parents are constantly fighting.

The main character of the book constantly draws out their lives as a comic. Of course, the comics are the more unrealistic aspect of the book as is meant but the whole things is ver I love this book. Of course, the comics are the more unrealistic aspect of the book as is meant but the whole things is very dramatic and to an extent, moving. Dec 12, J. Even though the cliche punishment-for-loss-of-virginity thing happens, this novel sparkles with excellent prose.

The last fifty pages are especially tight, and Margie is far more complex and interesting than the initial pages might lead someone to believe. Quite different from the movie.

An excellent novel. Dec 28, Tony rated it really liked it Shelves: Although set much later, in , this largely entertaining and touching book strikes many of the same chords as the movie Stand By Me.

The antics of a gang of outcast year-old Catholic-school boys in Savannah involve the usual coming of age subjects: This is mostly handled with care and a delicate touch, as is the tension of race relations, and parental abuse. The only part which rings false is a sub-plot involving a Although set much later, in , this largely entertaining and touching book strikes many of the same chords as the movie Stand By Me. The only part which rings false is a sub-plot involving a young girl with some serious sexual problems which are somewhat difficult to read about.

The hero's reaction to this is far too mature to be believable. Other than this slight misstep, the book is an excellent portrait of a time and place. If you like this, check out Tom Perrota's short story collection, Bad Haircut.

A very good collection--and interesting contrast--about growing up in South Central LA in the 70s is Living for the City. Jun 19, Trevor Church rated it it was amazing. I'd seen the movie years prior and decided I needed to read the book finally.

I'm glad I did. This book deserves more recognition. This book is a work of art and is a truth for many of those who will read it.

I think it's one of the more honest coming of age novels. I have so many questions and very little answers as the author is unfortunately dead. This was his one published work. In the word Wow. In the words of the author "people like that die young.

Fuhrmann's pre-publication death at 31 was a tragedy, for he certainly would have had more to say. Darkly funny, deeply moving at times, a very nicely executed coming-of-age story. Qualcuno fuma marijuana, qualcuno legge William Blake; ci si innamora, si prendono le botte.

Dec 09, Deidre rated it liked it. Potential is here in the book. I find the movie adaptation to be a lot stronger. I know the author passed before completely finishing touching up this novel. I think it could have gone thru another read thru and final edits.
