Although the technical stuff gets repeated a bit, the story itself and especially the climax is so exciting that reading the same explanation twice fades into insignificance. And, besides, how often do you get to read a novel carefully embedded in the first Gulf War -- the one liberating Kuwait from the monster, Saddam? And done so well it is hard to be sure which bits are true and which bits are not. The Fist of God will keep you engaged to the very end.

Although trite, the phrase "couldn't put down" , is appropriate here as this action novel will keep espionage as well as military action fans entertained from start to finish.

Forsyth does his usual best with well researched and accurate storytelling of a first rate action novel.

All fans of Forsyth will highly enjoy this story. Very much recommended.

The fist of God

It's literally been decades since I've read this book and I have forgotten just how good it was. It was just as exciting this time around. One person found this helpful.

This was my first Forsyth novel - now I'm going to have to read all the others. I learned more history from this book, than from any other source during the war, or after. Now I can picture the places so many of my friends fought - the landscape, the players, the intricacies.

The book moves along quickly, the characters multi-faceted. Great on so many levels - a Must-Read. A true page turner.

Brings the Gulf War into perspective. A well paced perfect melding of facts with fiction. Probably his best yet. Good read with excellent research carrying the plot.

Otherwise, the book parades the accoutrements of masculine warrior life: It's like a high-octane American Express advertisement.

You almost expect to hear Terence Conran pop up to explain that the SAS card is accepted in over a thousand destinations, and that you're always assured of a hot welcome.

That'll do nicely. The fact remains, however, that Forsyth pushes his characters to the verge of non-fiction in an interesting way.

For one thing, it is hard to see the joins; there are some obviously made-up characters such as the mad Iraqi tyrant Saddam Hussein, or the legendary warrior-queen Mrs Thatcher sharing the limelight with real-life heroes such as Mike Martin, SAS commando extraordinaire.

But too often the documentary aspects feel tacked- on. Characters give each other potted lectures or ask dim questions, or deliver swift summaries to jog things along. Now let me get this straight, they say, you mean that the isotope is already in the separation centrifuges. Holy Fist of God]. Perhaps the truly unsettling thing is that the adventure - a secret mission, a lone hero at large in Iraq - is hardly more implausible than the war itself, than all those missiles and navigational devices and uranium centrifuges, than all those fighter pilots blazing over the Gulf.

Still, the good news is we don't have to crash out and read it immediately.
