The Cuckoo's Calling

Paperback Verified Purchase. Galbraith Rowling writes beautiful passages at times but describing every person and scene in intense detail does not make a great book. A private eye novel should build suspense and constantly have the reader wondering what the next clue means. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. The first in a series of detective novels, this is the Introduction of Cormoran Strike, a private investigator who has seen better days: The arrival of his new temporary secretary, Robin, ushers in a season of change for both of them.

Soon, Strike is hired by the brother of a supermodel who famously fell to her death from the balcony of her third-floor flat 3 months prior. Based on the strength of the main characters and some of the peripheral ones, I gave this 4 out of 5 stars, and will be picking up the next book in the series to see how these characters continue to develop.

There are flashes of brilliance but for the most part, It's a very slow and drawn out book. The slowness makes it tough to read and you will without a doubt want to put it down several times when reading it because of it. The plot is pretty straight forward for a detective novel although it's certainly not predictable. I really enjoy Strike as a character as well as his assistant Robin.

I think the potential is there but Rowling should go back to the drawing board for the next book.

My biggest issue is the book's length. Nearly pages is far too long, Especially when there's quite a bit of filler in it. She should have went for a page length instead and it would have make for a much quicker and satisfying read.

Hopefully she tries to do that for the next book. And yes I have already bought the next book.

The Cuckoo's Calling

Despite my average review, I liked the characters enough to give them another shot. Cormoran Strike is not having a good time of it. His turbulent relationship has come to an end and he's sleeping in his office.

He's on the verge of losing that office because business has been tough, and even though Strike could rely on military benefits from the tour in Afghanistan that left him missing one leg, he's determined to make it on his own. A temp agency has just sent him an exceedingly capable assistant named Robin, but he can't afford to pay her and may lose her.

Right on cue, the client of Strike's dreams walks through the door and promises to solve all his problems if he'll look into the apparent suicide of world-famous supermodel Lula Landry. The central mystery is presented as the old 'locked room' scenario: The three other people in the building are all accounted for thanks to their own accounts of what happened, but one of them claims to have heard Lula screaming at someone before the fall--which should be impossible because of all the soundproof barriers between them at the time.

It's up to Strike to penetrate the mystery and find out what went on in that building. You could argue that this novel is overly long and unnecessarily slow, but it only seems that way because so much of the genre is overly concerned with fast pacing and constant cliffhangers.

Cuckoo's Calling grabs your attention the old-fashioned way and holds it without any tricks. It feels gratifying.

The payoff: Cuckoo also eschews the 'final twist' formula that has, frankly, become tired. Strike later meets with Bristow in his office, revealing that he is responsible for killing Lula and Rochelle as well as Charlie, who everyone believed died after riding his bicycle into a quarry. Bristow was both enraged that Lula had tracked down her biological brother, Jonah, and jealous of her success.

He murdered her for the same reason he murdered Charlie, which was to secure his own position, and then used Strike in an attempt to frame Jonah for the crime. Strike goes on to explain that Lula made a will that left her estate to Jonah and cut the Bristow family out entirely, which Bristow suspected. Bristow organized a plan to frame Jonah, which would make him unable to inherit, and used Strike's friendship with Charlie to achieve his endgame.

Realizing he has been caught, Bristow tries to stab Strike only to be subdued after Robin enters the office. Sometime later, Robin is preparing to leave for a supposedly permanent job when Strike gives her a parting gift in the form of a dress she tried on during the investigation. Despite being unable to pay her and being unable to suppress his romantic feelings for her, Strike convinces her to stay on.

Major characters[ edit ] Cormoran Strike is a struggling private investigator. He has few clients, a large debt, and is obliged by a recent break-up to sleep in his office on Denmark Street. He lost his leg in the Afghan war. Robin Ellacott, is Strike's temporary secretary. She has recently moved from Yorkshire with her boyfriend and becomes engaged the night before the novel begins.

She is enthusiastic about detective work, is very intelligent, competent and resourceful. She reveals a number of surprising talents as the story unfolds.

Lula Landry Talullah Bristow , a model who died in a fall three months prior to the events of the novel. The object of Strike's investigation is to determine how Lula died. John Bristow is Strike's client and Lula's adoptive brother. Charlie Bristow is John Bristow's brother and a boyhood friend of Strike's.

Charlie died when he fell into a quarry when he was around nine or ten years old. Charlie was about six years older than Lula Landry Bristow.

Alison Cresswell is in a relationship with John Bristow. She works as a secretary for Tony Landry and Cyprian May in their legal practice.

Tony Landry is Lula and John's maternal uncle. He disapproved of Lula's lifestyle, and raised objections to Lula's adoption in the first instance. He has a difficult relationship with his sister.

Lady Yvette Bristow is Lula and John's adopted mother. She is terminally ill during the events of the novel, and her relations with Lula were strained. Sir Alec Bristow is Lady Bristow's late husband. He founded his own electronics company, Albris.

Sir Alec was sterile and could not have children of his own. Lula was adopted when she was four years old, shortly after Charlie's death. Sir Alec died suddenly from a heart attack. Cyprian May is a senior partner at the law firm where John Bristow works. Everything points to this but as we get deeper in to the novel it becomes clear that all is not as it seems.
