Guidelines for Embodiment Design 7. ILl The Systematic Approach.
The book has been translated into five languages, making it a standard international reference of equal importance for improving the design methods of practising designers in industry and for educating students of mechanical engineering design. Although the third German edition conveys essentially the same message, it contains additional knowledge based on further findings from design research and from the application of systematic design methods in practice.
The latest references have also been included.
With these additions the book achieves all our aims and represents the state of the art. Substantial sections remain identical to the previous editions.
The layout of the book has been changed slightly compared with the previous editions to place more emphasis on general methods for finding and evaluating solutions.

These methods can usefully be applied during any phase of the design process, so separating them from the description of the main design phases and bringing them together in their own chapter reinforces this point.
Readers familiar with the previous editions, as well as new readers, will quickly appreciate the logic of the new layout.
We gratefully thank and acknowledge colleagues and practising engineers who have encouraged and supported us with suggestions and contributions during the preparation of the third German edition. We thank all of them for their enthusiastic cooperation. We must thank our publisher for excellent advice and assistance, as well as for another very careful production.
